TL;DR: Imperial collapse isn’t just an overseas spectator sport—it’s coming straight to a neighborhood near you. As America’s global hegemony shrinks, the massive apparatus of violence we spent decades exporting is turning inward. Despite violent crime dropping to historical lows, local cops are getting heavily militarized, police killings have hit record highs, press coverage is acting as a propaganda arm for law enforcement, and a masked, un-uniformed federal force is casually killing nurses in broad daylight. Welcome to the police state: built by both political parties, funded by your tax dollars, and designed to keep you in line when the empire finally implodes.

Pull up a chair, grab your favorite beverage, and let’s talk about the predictable, horrifying arc of dying empires—and why the heavy-duty military gear you used to see on CNN reports from Fallujah is now rolling down Main Street, USA.

Historian Timothy Snyder has spent years painstakingly documenting how authoritarians operate and how imperial power collapses. The playbook is astonishingly consistent: when a super-state spends generations projecting brutal violence, seizing resources, and trampling human rights abroad, it eventually runs out of foreign land to conquer. When that external expansion stalls, the imperial machine doesn’t just pack up and go home; it turns that exact same violent apparatus inward on its own citizens. Surveillance networks, paramilitary police forces, and the casual stripping away of basic due process migrate straight from the colonies to the homeland. Look at Russia, China, Turkey, or Iran—their internal security forces are massive, brutal, and designed to treat their own domestic population like an occupied enemy state.

America hasn’t escaped this trap; we are walking right into it. While our global footprint contracts, our domestic security state is expanding, getting heavily armed, and operating entirely outside basic human accountability.

The Bipartisan Build-Up

For decades, politicians from both sides of the aisle have competed in a desperate, endless game of “Who Can Kiss the Police Union’s Ring Harder?” They’ve regurgitated “tough on crime” soundbites to inflate police budgets and hand tactical weapons to local suburban departments, all while promising it would keep us safe.

Through the Pentagon’s infamous 1033 Program, the federal government has quietly funneled more than $7 billion in surplus military hardware—we’re talking rocket-resistant tanks, grenade launchers, and bayonets—to over 8,000 local police agencies since 1997.

And what did all those weapons buy us? Absolutely nothing.

A landmark 2020 Emory University study thoroughly dismantled the lie, finding that drowning police departments in military surplus equipment has zero meaningful effect on reducing crime. But wait, it gets better: another peer-reviewed study revealed that receiving 1033 military transfers is directly, statistically correlated with an increase in fatal officer-involved shootings. In short: give a local cop a tank, and suddenly every problem starts looking like a target.

Meanwhile, the “crime wave” justification is complete fiction. Violent crime didn’t just drop recently; it plummeted. In 2025, violent crime dropped 9.3% nationally—the biggest single-year drop since the FBI started keeping track back in 1936. The national murder rate tied the lowest level ever recorded in American history. This plummeting crime trend started well before Trump returned to the White House and held steady across blue cities, red states, and everything in between. The “tough on crime” rationale isn’t just outdated; it’s a completely manufactured lie designed to justify a perpetual militarization pipeline.

Violence in Blue

So, with crime dropping to historic lows, police violence must be dropping too, right?

Not even close. Police killings of civilians haven’t dropped; they’ve soared to record-shattering heights.

The years 2024 and 2025 hold the grim distinction of being the two deadliest years for police killings since Mapping Police Violence started tracking data in 2013. In 2024, officers killed 1,383 people—the highest number ever recorded. In 2025, they killed 1,314 people.

And before anyone tries to blame this entirely on the current administration, let’s set the record straight: that all-time record peak in 2024 happened under Joe Biden. This isn’t a one-party problem, and it’s not the result of one president “unleashing” the cops. This is a bipartisan, self-perpetuating security state that expands regardless of who sits in the Oval Office—and now it’s supercharging as it merges with Trump’s federal immigration crack-down.

What We Don’t Know CAN Hurt Us

Here is the really terrifying part: those record-breaking numbers are just the tip of the iceberg. The true scale of state violence in America is deliberately hidden.

Did you know that reporting fatal police shootings to the federal government is entirely voluntary? Shockingly, police departments aren’t super eager to report when their officers kill people. Investigations by The Washington Post proved that the FBI’s official database historically captures as little as a third to a half of actual police killings. Major departments—like Boston’s—happily took millions of dollars in federal grant money specifically earmarked to improve crime reporting, and then simply refused to report fatal shootings by their own officers.

And the corporate media is actively complicit in the cover-up. Newsrooms routinely take cop press releases, publish them verbatim as undisputed facts, and run to the next story. Months later, when bodycam footage proves the official police account was a total fabrication, the correction gets buried on page 37.

To top it all off, as of January 1, 2025, The Washington Post quietly froze its “Fatal Force” database—the gold-standard national tracker for a decade—right as Donald Trump took office. Whether billionaire owner Jeff Bezos froze the database to avoid pissing off the incoming president is a question you can answer for yourself. But because the mainstream press tapped out, the only reason we have a clear picture of lethal police force today is because an independent activist group—Mapping Police Violence—built and maintained a database out of their own pockets. The government won’t track it, the billionaire media won’t track it, so private citizens had to do it themselves.

Predators with a Badge

If you think the lethal force numbers are bad, the statistics on police sexual misconduct are downright horrific—and once again, completely ignored by official institutions.

In just the first 240 days of 2026, 284 U.S. law enforcement officers have been charged with or sentenced for sex crimes. That is essentially one officer every single day across 42 states.

The breakdown is sickening:

· 57.4% of these cases involved children (135 cases of child sexual abuse, and 28 cases involving child sexual abuse material).

· 158 were municipal police officers, 66 were correctional officers, and 63 were sheriff’s deputies.

Nearly half of these cases involved officers who had total physical control over incarcerated or detained individuals—people who have zero ability to leave and are almost never believed when they report abuse.

Does the federal government or any state agency compile a master list of these predatory cops? Of course not. The only reason we know this is because a research team at Bowling Green State University manually digs through news reports and court documents to compile the Henry A. Wallace Police Crime Database. They had to build it themselves because no government agency in America bothers to collect or publish data on criminal cops.

Federal Death Squads

The absolute clearest sign that the empire is turning its violent machinery inward is the meteoric rise of ICE and the Department of Homeland Security. They have become a parallel, virtually untouchable federal police force, operating with masked faces and no name tags against citizens and non-citizens alike.

In 2025, ICE detention deaths hit a 20-year high with 32 deaths in custody. Then came January 2026: six more people died in ICE custody in a single month, alongside two fatal public shootings by ICE agents, putting 2026 on track to smash that deadly record. A San Francisco Chronicle investigation found that a majority of the people dying in ICE custody had no violent criminal record whatsoever.

In Minneapolis alone, ICE agents killed two people within two weeks in January 2026: Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, and Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse. Neither of them was the target of any warrant.

Congressional Democrats had to introduce the DHS Use of Force Transparency Act in 2026 simply because DHS agencies refuse to publish basic use-of-force or injury data. As Setareh Ghandehari from the Detention Watch Network put it: “If we are seeing that sort of outward extreme violence in broad daylight in the streets of Minneapolis, imagine what people must be facing behind closed doors and behind bars in ICE detention centers.”

This is execution without trial, carried out by masked federal agents operating completely in the dark.

The Collapse Has Begun

When a corrupt, imperial government begins falling apart under the weight of its own greed, it doesn’t gracefully bow out. It doubles down on domestic tyranny, unleashing escalating violence at home to keep a tired, angry population under control.

Plummeting crime rates prove that their “public safety” excuse is a lie. Record police killings and deliberate reporting cover-ups prove that “police accountability” is a lie. Hundreds of cops charged with child sexual abuse prove that “protecting the vulnerable” is a lie. And masked federal agents killing ICU nurses in the street proves that our constitutional rights are hanging by a thread.

They built this architecture of oppression right in front of us, one massive funding bill and one executive order at a time. It’s time to wake up and smell the tear gas.
